Recently, the company I work for, MavenSocial, released a video asking What is a social media influencer? I made a little cameo as the voice of the company, but many of the answers we received were right on the mark and very perceptive!
So, what exactly is a social media influencer?
A social media influencer creates the conversation about a brand online. They are the 20% who actually bring about 80% of the traffic to most marketing campaigns. They have a tight-knit network of followers and friends who listen and act on what the influencer posts or shares.
The main difference between an influencer and someone who shares on their social media networks, is that influencers engage their followers and have them take some sort of action.
Brands are interested in identifying and (can I even say) “harnessing” the power of social media influencers because social media has created a two-way conversation between brands and consumers. In the past, brands pushed information at the consumer to “accept”. Social media has provided the perfect platform for the People; for the first time, brands do not control the conversation around their brand!
